Transferential Leadership. Towards a More Complex Understanding of Charisma in Organizations

Thierry C. Pauchant

Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales, University of Montréal, Montréal, Canada

Research on charismatic leadership in organizations has been sparse and remains inconclusive. In particular, a more systematic approach to differentiate types of charismatic leadership is needed. In this paper, we call for a research agenda focusing on the subjective and affective relationship established in the dyad leader-follower. We argue that the self psychology model is particularly suited for addressing this research agenda, propose a typology of charismatic leader ship with positive and negative outcomes, and suggest directions for future research.
